The Marine Airbags
Widely known as 'rubber airbags', 'MAX airbags', 'marine air bags', 'balloons/belons', these inflatables are made of reinforced rubber layers. These MAX Marine Airbags are manufactured according to ISO14409 Ship Launching Air Bags standard. They are cylindrical in shape with hemispherical heads at both ends.
"Ship launching using air bags is an innovative technique claimed to be invented by the Chinese and has been practiced for decades. Airbags are inflated to lift up the vessel or structure and then with the help of gravity, allow it to slide into the water in a controlled environment. This method can easily be used for all types and sizes of vessels, and is especially popular for flat bottom barges and small-to-medium sized vessels."
PROS
The technology is said to be a very cost effective solution and airbags can even be used up to more than 8 years under good maintenance and care. The prices of airbags differ according to types and sizes. But it seems even the bigger sized airbags usually cost less than other launching options.
Airbags provide support to the hull of the vessel and aid its launching motion into the water, further protecting the hull from damage, and according to Kevin, "it is a safe option for launching of structures up to 10,000 tonnes". In fact, with careful calculation and professional supervision, heavy vessels in China weighing more than 50,000 tonnes have been successfully launched using this technique too.
Besides, it is a much more environmentally friendly method as compared to oiled slipway launching, another common option for most small to medium vessels. Its versatility has been a huge factor of its massive adoption. Throughout the years, many issues like slipway limitations and working height problems can be solved without costing shipyards more.
CONS
So far, most failures are due to poor execution rather than product failure itself (except for cheap and poor quality airbags made by unethical suppliers). Slipway condition, vessel design and size plays a big role in determining the right type & number of airbags to be used. It may seem easy but first timers should not opt to do things all by themselves. Different sizes and types of airbags run with different recommended internal pressure as well as providing different lifting capacity. Kevin stresses that interested parties should seek advice on the type of airbags suitable for their use from a reputable supplier.
Successful execution that leverages the versatility of rubber airbags have led to low cost and safe launchings all around the world. Aside from manufacturing & supplying airbags, most leading suppliers also take on whole projects including launching consultation as well as supplies from winch accessories to rubber airbags so that everything can be well coordinated and quality assured.
OTHER USES
According to ShipLaunching.org the benefits of inflatable technologies are also particularly apparent in ship repair situations. The use of airbags for ship repairs have been practised by many mid-sized ship repair yards in South East Asia & China. Cost flexibility of airbags is one of the main reasons they have been able to stay ultra competitive in the industry.
These rubber inflatables are also used in marine salvage projects to float heavy structures. Most in the Asian shipbuilding industry especially for small and mid-sized shipbuilders claim the use of airbags as safe, cost effective and highly versatile. We are witnessing more adoption in North and South America and Europe in recent years. It remains to be seen, however, whether such technology is able to pick up momentum and serious adoption in other continents such as Europe.
Performance Calculation Principle of Airbags
The bearing capacity of marine airbags was calculated based on the working pressure, contact area. Herein, working pressure was got upon the burst pressure and safety working factor.
Because of the flexibility of marine airbag the contact area will be affected by some terms which include the carried ship condition, the different position from gravity center during the process of ship launching and pulling. So the bearing capacity of airbags will vary as well as the contact area.
The approximate bearing capacity can be calculated as follows:
F=PS
S=π x (D1-D2)/2
Mark:
F: Bearing capacity
P: Inner pressure
S: Contact area
D1: Diameter of airbags when free of loat
D2: Working height of airbags when loaded
